SAFETY AT JURBY.
As most of you will be aware, we, as a club, are unusual in having both fixed wing and rotary flying from the same site at the same time. Many clubs across have decided to split the different activities, but given the space we have available at Jurby, your committee, after quite a bit of discussion and some considerable thought, and because there has been some suggestion of overflying by one discipline over the other (and I use the word discipline advisedly), we have come up with the following:
Taking the CROSS runway as the datum, the area to the RIGHT, opposite the prison, and triangular in shape will be the HELICOPTER FLYING AREA. The helicopter pits will be around the chicane about the midpoint of the hypotenuse side of the triangle.
The USUAL fixed wing pits will be moved down the MAIN runway (towards the extension) by about a hundred yards, to a point opposite the end of the building behind the peri-track. This move in fact does little more than move the pits to a point much nearer the centre of the main runway.
In the event that the fixed wing pits have to go to the CROSS runway because of the prevailing weather conditions the point that has been used in the past will continue to be the pits area.
Because there is NO FLYING BEHIND THE PITS, there should be no conflict of space, and so, no overflying by one set of pilots over another.
It will still take good will and common sense to ensure that all club members get the greatest enjoyment from the superb facilities we enjoy, and crucially, we do so safely for all.
At Jurby, should you draw the key from the prison, please follow the instructions as set out below.
(The fact that there are no bookings for the airfield is NOT an indication that there is no one on the airfield. Mark and other staff could very well be on the airfield for any one of many reasons to do with the running of the place).
In order to comply with our obligations under the J.S.L. Ltd. and D.O.T. Licence Agreement, all MMF members must:-
1. Ensure that the Airfield is secured against unauthorised entry both when we are flying and when we leave the field.
2. On leaving the Airfield, ensure that the MMF combination lock is not preventing the opening of any gate(s) by JSL, DOT or any other authorised user.
3. The use of the Airfield and the Extension is strictly for the purpose of flying model aircraft.
Please observe the procedures when entering and leaving the Airfield
MMF Rules re. The Main Airfield and the Runway Extension
The Main Jurby Runway can be used by MMF when no other users are on the field and when no other booking has been made, as shown on:- www.jurby.org/calendar
The Extension Runway may ONLY be used when the Main Airfield is in use. Any MMF member using the Extension when the Main Airfield is vacant is abusing a facility offered to MMF by kind permission of Keith Kerruish. This valuable concession is free to the club; it can be withdrawn immediately and permanently and could affect all MMF members. Failure to observe the foregoing will constituted a serious breach of Club Rules.
Procedures when ENTERING the Main Airfield
As part of the ongoing progress with
safety at Jurby airfield we have added another simple step to the access
process. In future, when you draw the key from the prison you will find
a tag attached to the key fob. Simply follow the instruction that the
tag conveys. Failure to follow this simple step will be regarded as a
breach of our safety policy. The picture shows the tag, which will be
attached this afternoon, so the next flyable day this little addition will be
in operation.
Thanks in anticipation.
If the DOT lock is securing the left-hand pair of gates, go to the prison and draw the key. You will be required to show ID, MMF membership and/or sign a register. ( No, not that one…..)
Unlock the DOT lock which secures the two left-hand gates which share the same locking pillar and replace the DOT chain & lock so as to secure the right-hand of the two gates. Be careful to thread the chain so that it cannot be lifted over the centre pillar thus allowing the gate to be easily opened.
Place the MMF combination lock round the left gate and pillar ONLY and scramble the numbers.
Un-tie and secure the MMF “Aviation in Progress” notice. Before going off to fly…. check again to see if you have left the gates correctly locked. The MMF lock should secure one gate only; the other gates must be left so that someone with a DOT key can gain entry. The MMF combination must not be given to non-members.
Procedures when LEAVING the Airfield
Check and make sure that no one is left on the site!
Fold-up and tie the MMF “Aviation in Progress” notice.
Place the DOT chain through both left-hand gates and lock the padlock.
Remove the MMF combination lock and chain and re-lock it around the left-hand pillar nearest the Airfield fence. Do not thread the chain through any part of the gate, just low down round the pillar. Owing to its poor condition, this gate is scheduled for replacement anytime soon (DOT Time), and therefore the old gate must be capable of being removed and a new one installed. We wouldn’t want to slow down a DOT work crew by having them deal with our lock – would we ?? Again, before leaving, STOP & CHECK that all gates are secure. Our first failure to do this could be our last.
Return the key to the prison.
| Site 1. Power flying and thermal glider flying takes place at Jurby Airfield. This an excellent site, with a smooth runway available, as well as large areas of grass for launching gliders. Our use of the field is shared with several other organisations, co-ordinated by the Jurby
Sports and Leisure Ltd.. We do however have sole use of the field for
the Festival of Flight and also the Manx Commemorative Model Meet.
There are a few simple rules controlling where we operate from when using it. Hopefully the following will make it all clear. All pilots in command are required to be fully paid up members of the B.M.F.A and to obey the M.M.F. rules of operation. We operate from the intersection of the runways:- The Model runway is between the grass on the far side of the Full size runway and the Full size runway centreline, all take offs and landings must be on the Far side of the Full size runway centreline. NO taxiing towards the Flight Line, or helicopter or 3D flying, in the proximity of the Flight Line area is allowed. To take off or recover your model from the model runway call "Walking out" LOUDLY and ensure that everyone on the flight line is fully aware of your intentions before doing so. For Easterly and Westerly winds , flying South of the
East/West runway - left hand circuits in Westerly winds, and right hand circuits in Easterly winds.
For Northerly and Southerly winds, flying East of the North/South runway - right hand circuits in Northerly winds, and left hand circuits in Southerly winds. The pit area for models is on the Western side of the runway. Parking is behind the pits. Watch out for the Early morning Sun ! All flying takes place in accordance with the BMFA safety code; NO MODELS OF ANY KIND ARE TO BE HAND LAUNCHED OR TO TAKE OFF BEHIND THE FLIGHT LINE, models are flown in front of the pilot flight line at all times, which in the prevailing westerly wind case means South of the runway centreline, NOTE that models must NEVER be allowed to overfly the Flight Line, Pits, Car Park areas or the Prison area. If the wind is not directly down the runway, then diagonal take off and landings may be used, but in any case models must NOT over fly the Flight Line, Pits, or Car Park areas. 3D MODELS are to be flown in the designated Helicopter areas, they must NOT be flown in front of the Flight Line Pilots. Helicopters must be flown in the helicopter designated areas which is far removed from the flight line Use the Northern entrance to the Airfield, the left hand gate, using the procedures described at the top of the page.
