Flying Competition

After the lunch break, it was time for the scale flying but by now the wind had increased and was coming across the runway, all of which proved a stern test of the entrants flying skill!  All entrants had to make a smooth scale-like take-off, followed by a steady low-level fly-past, followed by a manoeuvre of the pilot’s choice before landing.  There was the occasional heart-stopping moment, especially for the smaller aircraft.  However, John Martin’s large Spacewalker coped extremely well in the, by now very strong wind, despite it’s light wing-loading.  The small models had their moments but did extremely well with some very smart turning into the wind at the last moments.  Dave Harris’ large aerobatic model was much more at home in the strong wind but the Spacewalker just beat him to the win with some superb flying on the part of John.  A special prize was given to Mike Ward for his efforts in the scale flying with his ‘lightweight model’.

Tim Magee then gave a superb display of helicopter flying for the benefit of everyone but especially for our guest judges.  Those who were brave enough, then carried on flying in the strong wind.  Altogether a very successful day.
